Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Phillippians 4:8.
The current economic crisis is either a recession or a depression. Local, national and international news overflows with the negative. But I have decided to focus on what is positive about the Indianapolis standard metropolitan statistical area (SMSA). My inspiration came suddenly. I am a student of the markets. I study equity behavior and the global stock markets the way some folks follow pro sports teams. The macro influences have reached home. Commercial real estate is being decimated. Anecdotes abound of layoffs and everyone knows several folks from my commercial real estate industry that are actively seeking employment. It's easy to get down and believe the headlines and behave accordingly. But I love a supply-demand imbalance and all this negative news gave me an idea. There must be other people who are starved for good news too. Although one has to look harder for it, it is possible that during down times, when the supply of bad news outpaces the supply of good news, the TRUE MARKET VALUE of good news should increase!
Thus this blog. Paul's message to the Philippians is a foundation for going forward with this blog. With one twist. The focus of the blog is the INDIANAPOLIS SMSA.
The following is the first example. I hope hundreds more will follow and that ideas will be sent to me for inclusion. I look forward to asking, inviting, encouraging co-workers to send me their ideas for uplifting stories from central Indiana. I actively seek ideas: a different story every day about someone or something in the Indianapolis business area that is uplifting, positive, true, and evidence of innovation, confidence, defiance etc. in the face of the current economic crisis.
Here's the first uplifting story. This morning near the end of service approximately 30 new members were introduced to our church congregation. A spokesperson from each family introduced themselves, their family members, and their respective occupations. If our church location were an archery target, the scatter of arrows was evenly distributed across the central Indiana region. Long drives like Fishers and Frankfort were as common as closer destinations like Zionsville and Lebanon. Each person also spoke briefly about what they do for a living. And guess what -- everyone had a job except a couple retirees who were not working by choice!! There was diversity in the people, in their color, their age, their status, their jobs. But the pastor said in his visits with them, that he found they all had something in common. They had been invited to visit by a member. Now before anyone dismisses this because it is about a church, let me remind the reader that churches are a business, that the media has been telling us that church giving is down, that church beneficent budgets are drained and that it's tough all over. And all that is probably true. But the message is clear. If you know of a product that is working for you, tell someone about it and invite them to try it.
Now I don't plan on spending much time on this blog talking about my pastor, my religion or my church, the Apostle Paul or Philippians. But they all conspired today to inspire me to focus on good news about central Indiana. So that will be the purpose of the blog.
